Writing this about midnight on Friday March 2. We fly from RDU to San Juan to meet the ship tomorrow and board on Sunday.
Had a fun lunch today with Mike’s Mom and her main squeeze Jerry (who drove us to Durham) our friend Linda and half of our hosts for tonight, Robert. That’s him and Robert in the dinner picture above-we have known each other way too long and even after years apart, it seems like no time has passed.
Then this evening we traveled to Kinston to have dinner at Chef & The Farmer. This is Vivian Howard’s Restaurant made famous on the PBS reality show, A Chef’s life. I have been an avid fan since the first season when an older lady showed Vivian the traditional way to make biscuits and it was just like watching my great grandmother make them many (many) years ago at Kitty Hawk. For anyone who wants to see the origins of southern cooking, I highly recommend the show.
Dinner was very tasty and the company was even better. I hope that we can go again sometime during the summer when tomatoes and corn are in season since from seeing the show I think that is when the restaurant really shines.
Black Bass with collard chowder
Steak with chimichurri
Pasta with bacon, cabbage & pecans
Spoonbread with mushrooms and spicy cabbage
We shared two appetizers-flash fried collards (crunchy and delicious) and beet hummus (tasty and tart)
